Great! We caught a monster bass! Here is what to do next…
When handling big fish, it is important to always have wet hands when handling them. The film of “slime” is the first line of defense in keeping pathogens and infection out of a fish. This is even more important now that the fish is tired and weakened from your fight.
Never pick up a 6+ pound fish with one hand by only its lower jaw. Always use your other hand to support its body. Its hungry mouth is the tool that allowed it to get that big—DON’T BREAK IT!
Finally, get that monster back into the water. The bigger the fish, the more energy and stress it puts on itself during the fight. It takes bigger fish longer to recover.
